Carol Jacobson of Bismarck, North Dakota, spends her free time on hobbies such as decorating, arts and crafts, and traveling. Her favorite trips away from Bismarck include those to historic sites in the United States and her country of origin, Norway. One of Carol Jacobson's top Norwegian destinations is the town of Lillehammer.
Those who make the trip to Lillehammer and the surrounding region have a number of places to visit and fun activities to enjoy. Here are just a few things to do in the Lillehammer area:
- Check Out Olympic Sites
As the host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, Lillehammer features several Olympics-related attractions. During the winter, visitors can enjoy the beautiful landscape while skiing the many slopes in the area. When summer arrives, a "wheelbob" down the Olympic bobsleigh and luge track is definitely recommended.
- Take in Local Culture
Lillehammer is home to several museums that are worth visiting. These include the Olympic Museum, which features exhibits about the history of the Olympics in Norway and the history of the games in general. Those interested in art will want to explore the Lillehammer Art Museum and make a stop at Fabrikken AS, the area's center for creative and cultural initiatives.
- Visit Ringebu Stave Church
With a history dating back to the early 13th century, Ringebu Stave Church is one of the oldest religious monuments in the Lillehammer area. The building is composed almost entirely of wood, and features the unique architectural style of stave churches, which were once very common sights throughout the Norwegian countryside. Today, however, Ringebu is one of just over two dozen of the churches still standing in Norway.
